Die Gemeinde liegt östlich der Hauptverkehrsachse Luzern-Ruswil-Ettiswil im Rottal. Zur Gemeinde gehören neben dem Dorf noch die Weiler Gattwil, Guglern, Luternau, St. Ottilien und Soppensee, sowie zahlreiche Häusergruppen und Einzelgehöfte. Die Gemeinde umfasst ein Gebiet von 1677 ha, wovon 73,7 % landwirtschaftliche Nutzfläche, 17,0 % Wald und Gehölz und 7,5 % Siedlungsfläche sind.
Alle Nachbargemeinden liegen ebenfalls im Kanton Luzern. Diese sind Grosswangen, Menznau, Nottwil, Oberkirch und Ruswil.
