Das CSEM SA ist ein Schweizer Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum mit den Schwerpunkten Mikro- und Nanotechnologie, Mikroelektronik, Systems Engineering und Kommunikationstechnologien. Neben dem Hauptsitz in Neuchâtel hat das CSEM weitere Standorte in Muttenz, Zürich, Alpnach und Landquart. Das CSEM betreibt eine Auslandsniederlassung in Brasilien.
Die Geschichte des CSEM begann Anfang der 1980er Jahre. Damals hatte die Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft visionäre Pläne entwickelt, nachdem im Bundesrat Sorgen laut geworden waren, die Schweiz könnte gegenüber ihren Nachbarländern bei den neuen Technologien ins Hintertreffen geraten. Um diesem Trend entgegenzuwirken, förderte der Rat energisch die Gründung eines privaten Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrums. Als idealen Standort für dieses neue Innovationszentrum wählte man das bereits seit Langem für seine Uhrenindustrie und Mikrotechnik bekannte Neuenburg aus.
