Eckernförde ist eine über 700 Jahre alte Hafenstadt im ehemaligen Herzogtum Schleswig. Über gut hundert Jahre war sie Kreisstadt des Kreises Eckernförde.
Da Eckernförde auf eine offizielle Einteilung in Stadtteile, eine genaue Grenzziehung zwischen ihnen und die Wahl von Ortsbeiräten verzichtet hat, sind die Stadtteilbezeichnungen historischen Ursprungs. Während die Abgrenzung der einzelnen Stadtteile in der Mitte und im Norden der Stadt heute noch keine größeren Probleme bereitet, ist die genaue Zuordnung aufgrund der regen Bautätigkeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg im Süden innerhalb und außerhalb der damaligen Stadtgrenzen heute zum Teil schwierig.
