Pinneberg ist die Kreisstadt des gleichnamigen Kreises in Holstein; Sitz der Kreisverwaltung ist seit 2011 allerdings das benachbarte Elmshorn. Pinneberg gehört zum Land Schleswig-Holstein und liegt in der Metropolregion Hamburg.
Pinneberg liegt Luftlinie etwa 18 Kilometer nordwestlich der Hamburger Innenstadt an der Mündung des Flusses Mühlenau in die Pinnau, die über die Unterelbe in die Nordsee abfließt. Die Stadt besteht aus den Ortsteilen Zentrum, Quellental, Thesdorf, Eggerstedt, Pinnebergerdorf und Waldenau-Datum. Sie grenzt im Norden an die Gemeinden Prisdorf, Kummerfeld und Borstel-Hohenraden, im Osten an die Gemeinden Tangstedt, Rellingen und Halstenbek, im Süden an die Städte Schenefeld und Hamburg und im Westen an die Gemeinde Appen.
