Schwäbisch Gmünd ist eine Stadt im Osten Baden-Württembergs, die etwa 50 km östlich der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart liegt. Sie gehört zur Region Ostwürttemberg und zur Randzone der europäischen Metropolregion Stuttgart. Sie ist sowohl einwohner- als auch flächenmäßig die größte Stadt im Remstal. Hinsichtlich der Bevölkerungsgröße ist sie nach Aalen die zweitgrößte Stadt des Ostalbkreises sowie der gesamten Region Ostwürttemberg, in der sie ein Mittelzentrum für ihr Umland bildet. Seit 1956 ist Schwäbisch Gmünd Große Kreisstadt und seit 1973 der Sitz des Regionalverbandes Ostwürttemberg.
Von 1805 bis 1934 hieß die Stadt amtlich Gmünd, eine Bezeichnung, die im örtlichen Sprachgebrauch weiterhin verwendet wird. Der Name der Stadt leitet sich vom Zusammenfluss vieler Bäche mit der Rems ab.
