Die erste Evenburg ließ Oberst Erhard Reichsfreiherr von Ehrentreuter als barockes Wasserschloss erbauen. Das aufwendig gestaltete Hauptgebäude ist auf einer Schlossinsel, die von einem breiten Wassergraben umgeben ist, errichtet worden. Abbildungen zeigen es als zweigeschossigen Backsteinbau mit beidseitig niedrigeren Anbauten auf einem Kellergeschoss. Die sehr qualitätsvolle Gestaltung im Stil des Niederländischen Klassizismus ist mit Bauten der bekannten niederländischen Architekten der Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts wie Jakob van Campen, Philips Vingboons oder Pieter Post vergleichbar. Das Schloss benannte der Erbauer nach seiner Gattin Eva von Ungnad —„Evenburg“.
