Der Sielort liegt unmittelbar an der Leybucht, einer kleinen Bucht an der ostfriesischen Westküste. Große Teile der Bucht wurden nach und nach eingedeicht, sodass Greetsiel heute der einzige Hafenort an der Leybucht ist. Zu Greetsiel gehören auch der Nebenort Hauen und der auf einer Warft gelegene Wohnplatz Akkens, die beide westlich des Dorfes liegen.
