Die Kirche markiert den historischen Mittelpunkt Bergedorfs, wo Reisende Pferde und Kutschen wechselten. Früher war die Stadt ein wichtiger Knotenpunkt zwischen Hamburg im Westen, Lübeck im Nordosten und Lüneburg im Süden.
