Die Universität Ostfinnland wurde 2010 durch eine Fusion der vormaligen Universitäten in Joensuu und Kuopio gegründet. Zur Universität gehören ein Campus in Joensuu, einer in Kuopio und ein kleinerer Campus in Savonlinna sowie die Mekrijärvi Forschungsstation in Ilomantsi.
Die Universität Ostfinnland ist eine der bedeutendsten Universitäten Finnlands. Ihre drei Standorte Joensuu, Kuopio und Savonlinna kommen insgesamt auf 15 000 Studierende und etwa 2600 Beschäftigte.
