Sie gehört administrativ zum Arrondissement Montbrison und ist Teil des Kantons Boën-sur-Lignon .Noirétable liegt im Forez im Zentralmassiv. Die Gemeinde gehört zum Regionalen Naturpark Livradois-Forez. Umgeben wird Noirétable von den Nachbargemeinden Cervières im Norden, Les Salles im Nordosten, Vêtre-sur-Anzon und Saint-Priest-la-Vêtre im Osten, Saint-Jean-la-Vêtre im Osten und Südosten, La Chamba im Süden, Vollore-Montagne im Westen und Südwesten, Viscomtat im Westen sowie Chabreloche im Nordwesten.
