Oliver Sacks erhielt 1960 seinen medizinischen Abschluss von diesem Queen's College. Seine Lebensgeschichte wurde mit dem Film "Neue Hoffnung" berühmt, in dem Robert De Niro und Robin Williams starred. 1966 begann er als Neurologe in der Langzeitpflegeeinrichtung des Beth Abraham Hospitals im Bronx zu arbeiten. Während dieser Zeit arbeitete er mit einer Gruppe von Überlebenden der Enzephalitis lethargica, die in den 1920er Jahren an Schlafkrankheit litten und jahrzehntelang nicht mehr eigenständig bewegen konnten. Seine Behandlung dieser Patienten wurde zur Grundlage seines Buches "Neue Hoffnung".
