Cividale del Friuli ist eine traditionsreiche Stadt im nordost-italienischen Friaul mit 11.095 Einwohnern .
In römischer Zeit hieß die Stadt Forum Iulii. Als das Langobardenreich im Jahre 776 endgültig durch die Franken besiegt wurde, erhielt sie den Namen Civitas Austriae, was „Stadt des Ostens“ bedeutet, da sie im östlichen Teil des Frankenreiches lag. Daraus entwickelten sich der italienische Name Cividale und der deutsche Name Östrich.
