An der Stelle der Kirche stand bereits eine romanische Kirche, die in der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts dem heutigen im Stil der Brabanter Gotik errichteten Bau weichen musste. 1468 brannte die Kirche aus, die zwischen 1481 und 1535 in ihrer heutigen Gestalt wiederhergestellt wurde. Nach der Reformation fiel die Kirche an die Reformierten. In der napoleonischen Zeit wurde die Kirche zur Simultankirche, der Chor wurde vom Kirchenschiff abgetrennt und den Katholiken übergeben. Seit 1930 ist die gesamte Kirche katholisch und wurde 1935 von Papst Pius XI. zur Basilica minor erhoben. Der Vierungsturm wurde nach Kriegszerstörungen 1957 als Betonkonstruktion wiederhergestellt.
