Das Gebiet von Middag Humsterland war einst ein Meer mit den Wattinseln Humsterland und Middag. Die Inseln waren von Wattgräben umgeben, die das Meerwasser bei Flut landeinwärts leiteten. Diese Eindringungen erfolgten aus dem westlich gelegenen Lauwerszee, dem heutigen Lauwersmeer, nachdem es 1969 eingedeicht wurde. Die Küstenlinie reichte früher bis an die Stadt Groningen, aber durch die Aufschüttung dieses Gebiets kam das Seeschlickgebiet trocken zu liegen. Dieser Prozess wurde nach 1100 durch die menschengemachte Aktivität der Eindeichung verstärkt.
