Es liegt nördlich von Grouw und südlich der Stadt Leeuwarden, zwischen Swichum und Wartena. Durch das Dorf fließt der Wargaastervaart, an dem sich auch einige Häfen befinden. Im nördlichen Bereich des Dorfes verläuft die N31. Nicht weit vom Dorf, im Südosten, liegt der Nationalpark De Alde Feanen. Im Jahr 2021 zählte das Dorf 1.830 Einwohner. Zum Dorf gehören auch die Wohnplätze Angwier, Domwier und Naarderburen. An der Südwestseite des Dorfkerns liegt die Trockenlegung Wargaastermeer, die auch eine eigene Gemeinschaft bildet.
