Im Jahr 1360 wird erstmals von einem Hof Drakesteyn berichtet.
Im Jahr 1634 wird Ernst von Reede der Eigentümer von Drakensteyn. Sein Sohn Gerard lässt 1640 ein neues, vollständig symmetrisches achteckiges Haus bauen, möglicherweise nach einem Entwurf von Jacob van Campen.
Im Jahr 1807 wird Drakensteyn Eigentum von mr. Paulus Wilhelmus Bosch, Bürgermeister von Utrecht. Das Haus bleibt dann 150 Jahre in der Familie, bis es 1959 von Frederik Lodewijk Bosch von Drakestein an Prinzessin Beatrix verkauft wird. Sie lässt das Schloss restaurieren und zieht 1963 dort ein. Nachdem sie Königin wird, zieht sie 1981 nach Den Haag. Seitdem wird Drakensteyn als Außen- und Gästehaus genutzt.
Im Jahr 2006 wurde bekannt, dass Drakensteyn renoviert werden sollte, um das Schloss wieder bewohnbar zu machen. Es werden einige Meter hinzugefügt und es wird umfassend gesichert und für das 21. Jahrhundert vorbereitet. Diese Nachricht nährte die Gerüchte, dass die Abdikation von Königin Beatrix unmittelbar bevorsteht, aber die RVD möchte dazu keine Stellung nehmen.
