Podgorica ist die Hauptstadt Montenegros. Mit Ausnahme des Staatspräsidenten, der in Cetinje residiert, haben hier alle wichtigen Institutionen der Republik ihren Sitz. Podgorica hat rund 150.000 Einwohner, die gesamte Gemeinde über 185.000 . Von 1946 bis 1992 hieß die Stadt nach Josip Broz Tito Titograd. Der Name Podgorica bedeutet auf Deutsch „am Fuß des Hügels“.
Die montenegrinische Hauptstadt liegt in einer weiten Ebene an der Mündung der Zeta in die Morača, die Podgorica von Norden nach Süden durchfließt. Bis zum Skutarisee im Süden sind es von Podgorica etwa 15 Kilometer.
