Just a stone's throw from the Grote Markt lies the Oude Beurs, one of the oldest streets in Antwerp. Here you will find the heritage house Den Wolsack. Since 2001, this building has housed the three major Flemish heritage associations: VCM, contact forum for heritage associations vzw, Monumentenwacht Vlaanderen vzw, Erfgoed Vlaanderen, and the coordinating center Open Monumentendag Vlaanderen. You can go there for all questions regarding immovable heritage.
Even in the 14th century, there were references to the building Den Wolsack. The name refers to a dead-end alley (or 'sack') where wool was stacked. The centerpiece of Den Wolsack is undoubtedly the Hofkamer at the back of the garden. This gem was converted from a storage place in 1772 by architect Engelbrecht Baets into a luxurious reception and exhibition hall on behalf of the then city secretary J. Van den Bogaert. The impressive clock on the façade is by the maker who designed the clock of the cathedral. The interior is richly decorated, including a stunning ceiling painting depicting the gods on Mount Olympus.
The first floor houses a unique feature: here you will find the book toilet. The walls of this 'smallest room' are completely covered with beautiful leather book bindings. A fire in the 1960s caused a lot of damage on this floor.
