The estate of the castle, with its forests, rivers, and vast hunting grounds, was purchased in May 1840 by King Leopold I of Belgium at the request of his wife, Queen Louise Marie. He first had a hunting lodge built on a terrace overlooking a deeply wooded valley. Then, in 1842, he had a castle built there by his court architect Alphonse Balat. Since then, the castle has served as a royal residence (in summer).
