The Bergenmeersen are a floodplain area with typical vegetation of grasslands, willow floodplain forests, mudflats, and salt marshes. Among the reeds, bulrushes, and great water plantains, winter teal, common pochards, bluethroats, little bitterns, and waders find their delights and homes.
Further along the drainage path of the Bergenmeersen dike, we step over the innovative sluice where the Scheldt water flows in and out of the area twice a day without hindering the fish. This way, a natural tidal area is being developed, a world first since 2013!
A little further, we go off the dike onto the boardwalk. A unique experience! In this area, during the development works, a medieval earthen fortification, a castle mound, was excavated. Its existence confirms the strategic importance of Wichelen on the Scheldt.
