Description by the author

Take exit 9 (Sart) when driving along the E42. In Solwaster, there are approximately 3 parking areas, before, in, and after the village. They are clearly marked with signs. This walk takes you – without exaggeration – along 2 of the most beautiful river or stream valleys in Belgium. We walk along the Statte and return along the Hoëgne. The Statte is a quiet stream in summer, winding through a fairytale valley. This part of the route is definitely manageable for children. Here and there, they can play in the stream easily and without too much danger. As we walk upstream, we climb about 170 m to Biolètes Fagne. Thus, we cross 3 different landscapes in succession: cultivated landscape (with livestock), mixed forests (mainly oak and beech), and coniferous/birch forest. We won't reach the actual moor this time. Once we leave the Statte, we walk about 2.5 kilometers along paved paths until just before the Croix du Tapeux. Here, we turn into a sandy path, and 500 m later, we climb via logging paths to the highest point of the route at 549 m. Then, we begin the descent to the Hoëgne. Via a small, steep path on the right side of the route, we reach the river. From here, the likelihood of encountering other hikers is much greater. The peace ends here. It is more dangerous for children than at the Statte. We now follow the river for 3 km. We zigzag over the countless bridges from one bank to the other until we finally arrive at the parking lot of the Passerelle de Belle Hé (or Belle Heid), where we start the more or less steep ascent to Solwaster. Note: Due to the terrain and the course of the paths, the 14 km route feels more like 20 km.
