The Hallmarkt in Halle is one of the medieval settlement centres of the city, the centre of salt production and is now a Wilhelminian square. The square is located in the west of the city centre between the market square and the Gerbersaale, a tributary of the Saale, which is now built over.
For centuries, the area of today's square was the centre of Halle's salt production and processing. Brine was extracted from four wells in the area and processed into salt in the boiling huts. The area, also known as Thal, had its own administration and jurisdiction, which was located in the Thalamt on the Hallmarkt, which was built in 1464 and demolished in 1881. Parts of the interior are now located in the Moritzburg, where a replica of the building was built. The boiling huts were essentially simple half-timbered buildings that chaotically existed the area until about 1790. Then the boiling huts were demolished and replaced by two larger boiling houses of the Pfännerschaft. In 1869, the Pfännerschaftliche saltworks ceased operations. Salt production had been transferred to the Royal Prussian Saltworks on the Saline Peninsula. The city acquired the site and began preparations for the construction of today's square by building over the Gebersaale and demolishing the city wall bordering the area to the west.
