Lake Cappenberg was created by the extension of a former dredging hole and is located in Lünen in the statistical district of Nordlünen, one of the three former villages of the former municipality of Altlünen.
The name of the lake is derived from Cappenberg Castle, a former monastery located in Cappenberg, a district of the town of Selm, three kilometres from the lake. The castle, in turn, is located on a hill of the same name.
