The Raketenstation Hombroich [ˈhɔmbʁoːx] is a museum site near Holzheim in the city of Neuss owned by the Insel Hombroich Foundation. In the past, a NATO missile site was located here.
In 1962, a barracks for 300 soldiers of the Belgian military forces was built on Neusser Straße in Grevenbroich-Kapellen. Subsequently, on behalf of the Americans, the construction of the rocket station in Neuss-Hombroich began on 13 ha, which was put into service by a Belgian rocket squadron in 1967. The two locations included a radar system in the immediate vicinity at the exit of Kapellen. Nike Hercules missiles, which had a range of up to 150 km and were equipped with the W31 nuclear warhead, were kept ready at the missile station. The military complex included 3 launch bases and was used for deterrence and national defense. Between 1968 and 1985, both the Belgian Air Force and US soldiers were stationed at this complex. In the 1980s, there were demonstrations and sit-ins in front of the plant by supporters of the peace movement, including in January 1984. The missiles were dismantled and transported away in 1988 as part of the INF Treaty. The site was closed in 1990.
