Description by the author

This hike around Boitzenburg will take your through an extraordinarily interesting cultivated landscape. We start at the Tiergarten park in the east of Boitzenburg. The former hunting grounds of the von Arnim family are home to Central Europe’s biggest population of 300 to 900 years old beech and oak trees. In the south-west of the town, there is a beech forest that has been created as an extended park: Carolinenhain. The forest that was named after Count von Arnim’s wife Anna Caroline von der Schulenburg stretches all the way to the chain of lakes including Krienkowsee and Schumellensee. Work on a landscape park was first taken up in 1780 and was continued by Lenné in 1838. A few more very big trees can be found here, too. The route goes past the von Arnim burial site, the Apollo temple with views of the castle, the serpent temple and a botanical curiosity: grown-together trees.Length: 11 kilometres (3 to 4 hours)Start/finish: BoitzenburgLogo/route sign: Yellow dot, green diagonal line + small plaque saying “Kleiner Boitzenburger”How to get there/return journey:By public transport: Take the RE3 (Stralsund) from Berlin central station (Hauptbahnhof) to Prenzlau.
