Description by the author

The only freshwater lake on the East Frisian Islands offers an almost unique habitat, especially for birds. In winter, you can look down from the paths through the tree branches and catch a glimpse of the masses of water birds that live at Hammersee. In summer, you can enjoy the idyllic green surroundings, which almost make you forget that Juist is only five hundred metres wide and that you are only a stone's throw away from the North Sea or the Wadden Sea.
The Hammersee was created during the Petriflut in 1651 (at least the history of the lake began at that time), when the island almost broke in two. Gradually, the dunes on the seaward side of Juist were filled in to defy further flooding. We have compiled more information about Hammersee for you on our blog.
It's easy to hike, walk, stroll or drive to Hammersee. From the village, take the Billstraße in the direction of Loog. From here, follow the signs, turn into the woods and you will find yourself at a viewing dune or another vantage point from which you can enjoy Lake Hammersee in all its glory. Alternatively, walk along the beach until you reach the Hammersee beach exit. From here - guessed right - follow the signs and you will soon find yourself at one of the viewing platforms at Hammersee. Stop for a moment and enjoy the Dree Water Utkiek, the view of the three bodies of water Hammersee, Wadden Sea and North Sea.
A hike to Hammersee is always a good idea! Of course, you can do this tour on Juist by walking, hiking, strolling or cycling. In any case, pay attention to the signs and - especially on the narrow paths in the woods - be considerate of other walkers / hikers and of nature as well as the local animals.

This path is also available in a similar form on Komoot and OutdoorActive .
