The Piacenzian is a period in the Pliocene. The Piacenzian was introduced into scientific literature in 1858 by the Swiss stratigrapher Karl Mayer-Eymar. It is named after this Italian city of Piacenza. It is a period of warming (the Piacenzian phase of the Pliocene - about 3 million years ago), when temperatures rose more than 3 °C, sea levels were 20 meters higher than today, and there was more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than ever before.
