A spectacular rock avalanche took place in 2007 on Monte Rosa. It followed an unusual spring heatwave across Europe. The 300,000 cubic metres of rock landed in a dry seasonal lake. If the lake would have been filled, it would have caused a huge wave and massive outpouring, with catastrophic consequences for the village of Macugnaga downstream. The NewScientist mentioned this as one of the early signs of climate change.
