At the age of 15, young Gerardus Mercator, then just Gerard de Cremer, was sent to the Hieronymus School of the Brothers of the Common Life in Hertogenbosch at the expense of his great-uncle Gijsbrecht. He stayed here for 3 1/2 years and learned reasoning and Latin grammar.
