The Echten pumping station is located just north of the village of Echten on the dike of the Tjeukemeer and drained the Veenpolder, which was diked between 1856 and 1859. Initially, the polder was drained by wind power. Around 1865, the first steam pumping station was built for the Veenpolder. The new pumping station, which was built in 1913, was also a steam pumping station. In 1925 it was decided to replace the steam power with electric drainage. The superfluous chimney was demolished a few years later.
