Description

The building and the interior of Amerongen Castle have a remarkable character that has been created over the centuries. Originally, the castle was a thirteenth-century residential tower that was built in the floodplains of the Rhine. The brothers Henric and Diederic Borre received permission in 1286 from the Dutch count Floris V to "make a Huys". Over the centuries, this Huys was expanded from a defensible residential tower to a castle with towers. The castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times in those early years.

In the sixteenth century, Goert van Reede settled on the castle. The Van Reede family remained the owner for more than three centuries. In 1673 the castle, which was then in the possession of Godard Adriaan van Reede and Margaretha Turnor, was burned down by the French troops of Louis XIV. A Dutch classicist Huys was built on the old foundations as it still stands today.

At the beginning of the 18th century, Henriette Countess of Nassau Zuylestein decorated the castle entirely according to the requirements of the time with beautiful furniture and cabinets filled with porcelain, silver and damask. When the French army invaded the Netherlands in 1795, the Orange-minded van Reede family left for England together with stadtholder William V. The departure of the van Reede family to England means a long-term absence of owners for Amerongen Castle.

It was not until the end of the nineteenth century that the castle was re-inhabited. The property of the Van Reede family passes to the family of Aldenburg Bentinck. With attention and passion for the authentic character, Count of Aldenburg Bentinck had the castle adapted to the requirements of his time. Around 1900, architect Pierre Cuypers was commissioned to adapt and beautify a number of rooms. In 1977, his grandchildren handed over the castle to the Amerongen Castle Foundation, which aims to preserve the castle and open it to the public. Today, this unique location can still be admired.
