On the left, you see the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, and as you can see in the photo from 1892, a lot has changed here in 100 years. The photo was taken during the opening of the canal in 1892. It was then called the Merwede Canal. In 1952, after being widened and extended, it was renamed the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. On the right side of the photo, you can still see the former drawbridge. The current - fixed - bridge was installed in 2017 and is located a bit further down, as you can see.
The Amsterdam-Rhine Canal is the busiest canal in Western Europe and is of great importance for water management in this area. Across the canal lies the Poeldijk. When the railway was constructed and a station was built, the name was changed to Stationsweg. The church towers still stand as they did in the past (one has become invisible due to the tall trees), but the empty meadows have since been filled with houses and an industrial area.
This sign is part of the Then and Now walk through Breukelen. The route takes you past the most remarkable places and buildings of the village center and shows images from the past, positioned so you can see the current situation from the same perspective as the photographer or artist of that time.
