The Orchid Route goes past places in the center of Hoofddorp where orchids bloom in May, June and July. The route can also be followed via the red route signs.

When you think of orchids, you quickly think of tropical areas, but wild species also occur in our fully built-up Netherlands. In the tropics they grow high in the trees, but with us just on the ground. Some parts of Haarlemmermeer turn out to be a perfect breeding ground for orchids.

Orchids are protected plants, which can grow both on poor dry soil and along the water. All of them show the shape of a long flower plume, with leaves at the base. The flower color can be purple, greenish or mixed. Characteristic is the separate flower structure, with a long lip and a column.
