The Peer Gynt Road (Norwegian: Peer Gynt Vegen) is a 60-kilometer long tourist route named after Peer Gynt. The road is mostly a toll road and runs in eastern Norway in the province of Innlandet, near the area of Jotunheimen, passing through the villages of Skeikampen, Fagerhøy, Gålå, Fefor, and Dalseter. The road takes you through mountainous landscapes with views of the Rondane massif, Jotunheimen, and Dovrefjell. The road traverses a varied landscape with many authentic summer farms combined with unspoiled nature. There are many opportunities for hikers, cyclists, and anglers.
The road is only open in summer and is closed when it snows. It opens at the end of May or early June when the snow has melted. The road starts in the south at Skeikampen, about 45 minutes from Lillehammer, and heads northwest to Dalseter.
Located in the Gudbrandsdal between Tretten and Vinstra is a beautiful nature area that has become known as the Peer Gynt region. The approximately 60 km long Peer Gynt Vegen runs through this area, one of the most famous mountain roads in Norway.
The Legend:
This Peer Gynt Vegen (and also this region) is named after the legendary Peer Gynt. Gynt grew up in the 17th or 18th century on a farm near Vinstra. The farm is open for visits in summer. The remarkable adventures of Peer Gynt continue to live on in Norwegian folklore, in a play by Henrik Ibsen, and the accompanying music by Edvard Grieg.
This route also contains a lot of unpaved sections.
