El Klein Begijnhof – no mucho más grande que una sola calle – data del siglo XIII y fue fundado como comunidad de vida para mujeres que querían vivir religiosamente fuera de las murallas de un monasterio. Permanecieron célibes, pero no hicieron un voto eterno: el beguinaje fue una forma temprana de autonomía para mujeres que salieron de la burguesía.
Después de la Revolución Francesa, la iglesia perdió su control sobre el sitio. El OCMW asumió la gestión. Alrededor del cambio de siglo, el beguinaje fue completamente renovado. Parte se vendió como viviendas privadas, y parte quedó en manos del OCMW como oferta de vivienda social. Eso se traduce hoy en unas diez viviendas.
El OCMW conserva diez viviendas sociales en un beguinaje que está en gran parte privatizado. ¿Es eso una victoria para el bien público o un raquítico resto de un mundo que desapareció?
