El Hageland cuenta con muchas colinas. Hay una explicación geológica para esto, ya que aquí se encuentran colinas testigo fuertemente esculpidas del Mar Diestiano, llamado así por la ciudad de Diest. Ese Mar Diestiano inundó sobre todo el norte de Bélgica durante el período del Terciario (hace 70 a 3 millones de años). La arena se unió fuertemente en su composición para formar duras islas de arena. Con la exposición regular de estas islas de arena, el glauconita se ha desgastado y la arena se ha soldado entre sí, dando lugar así a una fuerte capa de arenisca ferruginosa.
