De Zavelenberg en Berchem-Sainte-Agathe es aún un vestigio del área rural en Bruselas. El terreno ha mantenido su estructura con setos, cercas y árboles. La topografía desigual de la Zavelenberg se debe a la explotación de la cantera de caliza en la Edad Media.
La cima de la Zavelenberg es una colina boscosa. La rápida urbanización de Berchem-Sainte-Agathe y Ganshoren tras la construcción de la Avenida Charles Quint ha llevado a una reducción considerable del terreno de la Zavelenberg, que en ese tiempo se dividió definitivamente en dos. Actualmente quedan 16 hectáreas. En los prados de la Zavelenberg pastan el ganado del último agricultor de Bruselas. La Zavelenberg ha sido un paisaje protegido desde 1989 y una reserva natural desde 1992.
La Zavelenberg es sin duda interesante por su paisaje, pero también tiene un significado ecológico. Por ejemplo, hay muchos liebres en el terreno, así como una gran cantidad de aves y anfibios.
