Este castillo fue construido a principios del siglo XVI y más tarde pasó a ser propiedad de Jan de Luu, el entonces alcalde de Aalst. Según Boon, de Luu era leal a Orange y quería que la ciudad católica de Aalst cayera en manos de los Geuzen. En 1580, los Geuzen ocuparon el Waterkasteel. Boon describe el papel importante que jugó la fortaleza en la lucha de los Geuzen: desde aquí, los Geuzen intentaron asaltar Aalst en noviembre de 1581. El plan fracasó porque las tropas que debían seguirlos se acercaron demasiado y fueron detectadas por los centinelas de Aalst.
