Según muchas imágenes y guías turísticas, las Ardenas comienzan, entre otros lugares, desde Namur, mientras que los expertos se refieren entonces a la Condroz. Hay, por lo tanto, cierta confusión de nombres entre las Ardenas turísticas y las Ardenas geológicas. Según los geólogos, las Ardenas se encuentran sobre un sustrato que data del Devónico Inferior y anterior (Silúrico, Ordovícico y Cámbrico). Por lo tanto, la Condroz, Fagne-Famenne y la franja de caliza no están incluidas aquí. Una regla fácil para recordar la diferencia es: las Ardenas no contienen piedra caliza, mientras que la Condroz, Fagne-Famenne y la franja de caliza sí la tienen.
