La palabra flamenca 'kouter' proviene del latín y significa algo así como tierra de cultivo fértil o gran campo abierto. La región debe esta fertilidad a su suelo arcilloso. Aquí hay pocas aldeas y casi ninguna granja llama la atención.
Esta caminata le lleva a través de pequeños caminos de aldeas y campos, senderos y caminos completamente integrados en la naturaleza. En estos muchos caminos no hay o casi no hay tráfico motorizado. Algunas calles han existido durante siglos, y en algunos casos la historia se remonta incluso a la época romana.
