Al principio del siglo XIX, Ludwig van Beethoven vivía en Viena, pero en 1809 pretendió venir a Kassel para convertirse en kappelmeister. Quería quedarse en Viena, pero luego la nobleza tuvo que garantizarle un ingreso constante. Su engaño funcionó. El 26 de febrero recibió el contrato que quería con una tarifa anual de 4000 florines.
