En total, el área metropolitana de Hamburgo se extiende por una superficie de 2.087 km² y cuenta con una población de 2,55 millones de habitantes, de los cuales 36 y 69% corresponden a la ciudad de Hamburgo, respectivamente. Tiene una densidad de población de 1.222 hab/km².
