Desde el siglo XI y XII, el oro de Bentheim se extrae en diversas canteras. En su época de esplendor, había más de 20 canteras aquí; hoy en día, solo hay dos en uso que se pueden visitar. En Gildehaus y en el teatro al aire libre de Bad Bentheim, aún se extrae arenisca de color beige.
