Jean-Jacques Rousseau escribió que Guernica era la ciudad más feliz del mundo debido al establecimiento de gobiernos democráticos (mediados del siglo 18). Como se sabe, la ciudad fue bombardeada en 1937. El bombardeo de Guernica el 26 de abril de 1937 se conmemora con un monumento en la Fuente de Mercurio.
