El lago Estinfalia es un paraíso para un ornitólogo, pero también para aquellos que aman la mitología, porque esta fue la zona donde vivían los pájaros estinfálicos. Estos eran pájaros carnívoros con alas de bronce y plumas metálicas afiladas que podían lanzar a sus víctimas, y eran mascotas de Ares, el dios de la guerra. Además, su excremento era altamente tóxico. Fue una de las 12 tareas de Heracles deshacerse de los pájaros. De Atenea y Hefesto, recibió enormes castañuelas de bronce para asustar a los pájaros. Podía disparar a los pájaros en su vuelo.
