El hospital, que fue diseñado por William Deane Butler en estilo isabelino, abrió como el Asilo de Sligo en 1855. Se convirtió en el Hospital Mental de Sligo en la década de 1920 y luego se transformó en el Hospital de San Columba en la década de 1950. Tras la introducción de la desinstitucionalización a finales de la década de 1980, el hospital entró en un período de declive y cerró en 1992. Después de ser convertido para uso hotelero, reabrió como el Hotel Clarion en 2005 y fue posteriormente re-marcado como el Hotel Clayton. A partir de 2021, hay 167 habitaciones disponibles para su uso.
