La isla de bicicleta neerlandesa de Texel fue elegida por National Geographic como la 12ª isla más hermosa del mundo de una lista de 111. Las primeras de la lista fueron las Islas Feroe.
Texel también fue elegida como lugar de residencia por Jan Wolkers, quien falleció el 19 de octubre de 2007 a los 81 años de edad. Se mudó allí en 1981 en el barrio de Westermient.
