Elvas está a apenas 8 km de Badajoz. La ciudad fue fundada por los romanos con el nombre de Alpesa. Durante la reconquista, la ciudad cayó primero en 1166 en manos del rey de Portugal, pero luego volvió a manos de los árabes. Finalmente, la ciudad se volvió portuguesa en 1126. Desde 1570, Elvas tiene una sede episcopal. La ciudad desempeñó un papel importante en las guerras fronterizas del siglo XVII.
