Peu après la 2ème guerre mondiale (1947), les premiers bancs en bois massif apparaissent sur la digue de Middelkerke. D'abord verts et blancs, puis peints aux couleurs de Middelkerke : bleu et blanc. Ces premiers bancs en bois massif étaient une conception propre de Rudolf Lombaert, un habitant de Middelkerke, et ont été construits par le menuisier local Maurice Minu avec du 'bois congolais'. Avec le temps, ils sont restés indissociablement liés à l'image du Middelkerke touristique.
