La place Saint-Bavon (Sint-Baafsplein) est à Gand ce que l'Ile Saint-Louis est à Paris: le coeur de la ville. C'est sur cette île, à deux pas de l'endroit où l'Escaut et la Lys confluent, qu'est né Gand. Son nom, dérivé du celte Ganda ou confluence, y fait littéralement référence.
Sur cette place centrale, les trois pouvoirs se rencontrent: la bourgeoisie avec son imposant Beffroi (het Belfort), l'intelligentsia et son majestueux théâtre (de Schouwburg), et le clergé, avec son impressionnante Cathédrale Saint-Bavon (Sint-Baafskathedraal).
